Liberal

Based on your answers to the questionnaire, you most closely resemble survey respondents within the Liberal typology group. This does not mean that you necessarily fit every group characteristic or agree with the group on all issues.

Liberals represent 17 percent of the American public, and 19 percent of registered voters.

Basic Description
This group has nearly doubled in proportion since 1999, Liberals now comprise the largest share of Democrats and is the single largest of the nine Typology groups. They are the most opposed to an assertive foreign policy, the most secular, and take the most liberal views on social issues such as homosexuality, abortion, and censorship. They differ from other Democratic groups in that they are strongly pro-environment and pro-immigration, issues which are more controversial among Conservative and Disadvantaged Democrats.

Defining Values
Strongest preference for diplomacy over use of military force. Pro-choice, supportive of gay marriage and strongly favor environmental protection. Low participation in religious activities. Most sympathetic of any group to immigrants as well as labor unions, and most opposed to the anti-terrorism Patriot Act.

Who They Are
Most (62%) identify themselves as liberal. Predominantly white (83%), most highly educated group (49% have a college degree or more), and youngest group after Bystanders. Least religious group in typology: 43% report they seldom or never attend religious services; nearly a quarter (22%) are seculars. More than one-third never married (36%). Largest group residing in urban areas (42%) and in the western half the country (34%). Wealthiest Democratic group (41% earn at least $75,000).

Lifestyle Notes
Largest group to have been born (or whose parents were born) outside of the U.S. or Canada (20%). Least likely to report having a gun at home (23%) or attending bible study or prayer group meetings (13%).

2004 Election
Bush 2%, Kerry 81%

Party ID
59% Democrat; 40% Independent/No Preference, 1% Republican (92% Dem/Lean Dem)

Media Use
Liberals are second only to Enterprisers in following news about government and public affairs most of the time (60%). Liberals’ use of the internet to get news is the highest among all groups (37%).

Note: All descriptions and percentages are based on the national sample of adults surveyed by telephone in December. Based on your answers to the survey questions, you most closely resemble survey respondents within this group, even though you may differ significantly on one or more issues or traits.

In the overall typology there is a ninth group called “Bystanders” who are defined as adults who are not registered, who do not follow news about government and public affairs, and who say they rarely or never vote.

Priorities (in rank order)

Table of Contents:

1. [Develop documents highlighting best practices in honor courts and student government associations in high schools]

2. [Manage the Consortium’s monthly e-mail alerts]

3. Research options for developing a database of civic resources

1. Develop documents highlighting best practices in honor courts and student government associations in high schools

· Honor Courts: Research models of honor courts at the University level, paying attention to structure, selection, authority, and outcomes. Research the impact of honor courts on school culture at Universities, if available, at high schools. Research the legality of implementing honor courts at the high school-level, that is, what authority could honor courts have at the high school level—i.e. could they make recommendations to the principal and what would the scope of these recommendations be? Research possible infractions that would be subject to a high school honor court. Compile the results of the best practices from Universities, research on legality, and research on infractions into one document that summarizes why and how high schools should and could implement honor courts.

· Student Government Associations: Research best practices for student government associations at the high school level and develop 1-2 page documents that highlight each best practice. Topics may include, but are not limited to: meaningful activities for SGAs; how to be a good SGA advisor; connecting the SGA with school administration; or how to ensure that your SGA isn’t filled with “the usual suspects.” Complete the existing checklist for SGAs by reorganizing, editing, and/or enhancing. For each of the above documents, ideas may be solicited from the Consortium’s existing contacts. Consider developing a set of questions related to each best practice and seeking information through a series of questions.

2. Manage the Consortium’s monthly e-mail alerts

Compile “news” and “current opportunities” stories, as sent to you by Kelley or Katherine. Draft relevant news articles based on facts provided by Kelley. Post news and current opportunities to the web site, using the existing template.

Create the e-mail alert, using existing template. Distribute alert using partners database from Access and SOG1 and SOG2 lists on Outlook.

3. Research options for developing a database of civic resources

· What we need: an online database that can house Word or PDF files of individual lessons, activities, and best practices. These items will need to be pulled up through choices in a series of drop down bars. The database needs to be housed on our web site and we need to be able to add to the contents of the database as needed. Additional question to be answered: do we contract with one person to develop the database and the web interface or are these separate jobs?

· Meet with Philip Young, SOG faculty, about the capacity of the Consortium’s web site to house such a database. Meet with Carrie Holbert, ITS staff, about the capacity of the UNC server to house the database. Query potential vendors about cost.

· Compile findings on next steps, including proposed contractors, into a recommendation document.

myself as a south park character Posted by Hello

Saturday, May 03, 2003

So, yeah, I haven't posted in a month. It's not that I've been busy, so much as lazy. Damn me. Oh well, I wouldn't want to keep the adoring public waiting. Onward then. My love life has gone nowhere, as per usual. Nothing new to report, and frankly nothing to report at all. I'm also quite annoyed with two things today, both of which, incidentally, have to do with the race for President of the United States. First, I may (or may not) be working for John Kerry this summer. I don't know because the apparently haven't called, which is a monster pain in the ass. Second, I was told that the candidate debate would be on tonight, but it, in fact, won't be shown until tomorrow morning. Grrrrr. I did see "Better Luck Tomorrow" tonight. It was superb!!! Really, if you have the chance, you should see it. Basically it is the story of four Asian American high school students who get involved, progressively, in certain unethical and even criminal activities. The plot is great, the actind is truly superb, even from its no name cast, and the cinematography is truly amazing. There are many shots in the movie that sticks with you for a while, but particularly distinguished among them is the virtuoso 360 degree swing shot. I'll explain it to you if you ask. So yeah, I hope this helps you to see the boringness of the life we call PJ's

Ok this is my first blog, and I've never done this before. Hopefully I will acquit myself well. Well, it's back to work for me, as I have massive amounts of work to do. Ciao, America!
